Weleda Skin Food Nourishing Cleansing Balm review

I’ve never tried a cleansing balm that is sold in a tube. You? It makes the Weleda Skin Food Nourishing Cleansing Balm a real ‘first’ for me. It’s not just the packaging that’s different, as I discovered…

Weleda is a very long-established natural skincare brand, but one that has attracted a cult following. Its products are sold just about everywhere, when it comes to beauty outlets, so they are much easier to source than those from many other niche brands.

A cleansing balm is my holy grail, and the starting point for all my evening skincare routines. Good balms will not just remove all traces of makeup and grime, they will also leave the skin feeling soft and hydrated, and contribute to the beneftis of an overall skincare regimen.

So, how did Weleda’s offering perform? Before I walk you through my experience, here’s some information about the product.

A natural cleansing balm

Weleda Skin Food Nourishing Cleansing Balm wears its green credentials on its sleeve - literally. This cleanser is packed with skin-loving botanicals. They include:

Organic sunflower oil - a super hydrator, boosting moisturisation levels in the skin. It is also a potent antioxidant. It contains vitamin E, as well as vitamins A, C, D and K. Together, these help to protect the skin from premature ageing and combat environmental damage. That’s not all. Sunflower oil is also known to minimise pores and even out the skin tone.

Viola tricolor - derived from wild pansies. As well as soothing sensitive skin, this organic ingredient is an anti-inflammatory and gives the skin a moisturised surface - thanks to long-chain sugars that form a barrier between the skin and the environment. Better still, this ingredient increases the metabolism of cells in the skin, ironing out fine lines and diminishing other signs of ageing.

Organic calendula - an antibacterial agent. It is also a proven anti-inflammatory and is anti-fungal. It is extracted from marigolds and widely used in natural beauty products for its soothing properties.

Organic chamomile - brightens the skin and tightens pores. It’s another anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. This ingredient is also used to reduce puffiness under the eyes and reduce the appearance of dark circles. All in all, another high-performance skincare ingredient.

Weleda describes its Skin Food cleansing balm as microbiome-friendly, something that will appeal to those who are serious about skincare.

This vegan product is sold in a 75ml recyclable tube.

Using Weleda Skin Food Nourishing Cleansing Balm

I don't want to rush head-long into my review of using the balm before I address a few things about the packaging first. As regular readers will know, I like my beauty products to ‘look nice’. I see them as an extension of my decor. This is the only area where the balm product falls short.

I know that Weleda is a respected ‘green’ brand, but the bright green packaging doesn’t do it for me. The tube is great - much easier to place on a shelf or dressing table than a clumsy jar, but bright green? Part of the branding, it is specific to Weleda’s Skin Food collection, but still… I am sure it puts a lot of people off. I hate to say it, but it reminds me of a cheap and nasty scrub or face wash. However, DON'T be put off!

Onto the actual product! This balm comes out of the tube like an ointment. It’s clear and super-soft to the touch. Oil-based, it quickly melts into the skin and has the most wonderful botanical aroma. I’m going to say, the best aroma of any cleansing balm I’ve previously used. It’s not overwhelming either. Just beautiful and relaxing. Ahh… If I had to describe it, I'd say it has a slightly zesty fragrance.

Instantly soothing and smoothing, this cleansing balm feels luxurious on the skin. There is no foaming or lathering. It can be simply wiped off with a damp cloth or rinsed away with tepid water. Note: If you choose to use water, the balm turns into a light, milky cream. The result? Even for me, a heavy makeup wearer, this product removes every last trace of makeup and leaves my skin feeling super-clean, soft and refreshed.

Because this product makes my face feel amazing, I do not want to ruin the effect with a double cleanse. I’ve even skipped the toner and gone straight onto applying my serum (Disciple Dreamy Skin Retinyl Night Oil) and a night cream. The result? Fantastic skin - every morning.

I really like this cleansing balm. It definitely works well with other skincare products I use and, I am going to say, appears to boost their performance. The bag under my left eye has significantly diminished, which is absolutely amazing. I didn’t quite achieve that level of minimisation with the night oil and cream on their own.

Value-wise, Weleda Skin Food Nourishing Cleansing Balm is a steal at £12.95 (if you shop around, you will get it for less where it is on offer). This cleansing balm outperforms many premium alternatives and delivers more product for less. Is it the best cleansing balm I’ve ever used? Hands-down, YES! The skincare benefits are fabulous.

I came across this balm in my new beauty hang-out - Holland & Barrett.

Another really great find and an incentive to try other Weleda products. Suffice to say, I will be buying this cleansing balm again - and again and again! It's affordable and it delivers great results.
