Ever wondered why the best night creams feel so luxurious on the skin? Well, a lot of the magic lies in a little something called Vitamin A. It’s not just silky to the touch, it’s the secret ingredient for a youthful-looking complexion. However, not all Vitamin A face creams contain enough of the active ingredient to make a difference and not all are manufactured with ‘natural’ in mind.
The eco-friendly skincare brand VitaSkin is different. Not only is its Vitamin A night cream 99 percent natural and 100 percent vegan, it’s surprisingly inexpensive - yet contains high levels of both Vitamin A and Vitamin E.
Vitamin A is like a superhero for your skin. It's a powerful antioxidant that helps fight off those annoying free radicals that can damage your skin cells. Think of it as your skin's personal bodyguard, protecting it from environmental stressors and premature ageing.
But Vitamin A doesn't just stop there. It's also a skin-cell turnover booster. What does that mean? Well, as we age, our skin cells don't renew themselves as quickly as they once did. Vitamin A helps to speed up this process, revealing fresher, younger-looking skin.
And if you're struggling with acne, Vitamin A can be a game-changer. It helps to regulate oil production, reducing the appearance of blemishes and preventing future breakouts.
There are a few different forms of Vitamin A, but the most common one in skincare products is retinol. Retinol is a milder form of Vitamin A that is generally well-tolerated by most skin types. This product contains the real deal, retinoid.
VitaSkin Vitamin A Rejuvenating Night Cream targets signs of ageing
While our skin works tirelessly to repair itself during sleep, a little extra boost can go a long way. If your skin is anything like mine, it will be prone to ‘middle-age dullness’ - a skin concern that develops over time. It is caused by factors like sun exposure, pollution and stress.
So a brightening night cream can be really useful in helping to fade dark spots, hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone in general. A good brightening cream will inhibit the production of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin colour.
VitaSkin Vitamin A Rejuvenating Night Cream is formulated to even the skin tone while you sleep.
Sadly, skin dullness isn’t the only sign of ageing reflected in the face. As we age, our skin loses elasticity and collagen, leading to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. Line-filling night creams contain ingredients that can stimulate collagen production, helping to plump up the skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Vitamin A is a powerful antioxidant that can help accelerate skin cell turnover, revealing smoother, younger-looking skin.
As its name suggests, the Vitaskin night cream contains retinoid - along with other hero ingredients.
Ingredients include:
Carrot Seed Oil - tightens and lifts the skin while regenerating cells. It is often used in skincare products because it is proven to repair environmental damage.
Lavender Oil - antibacterial and packed with antioxidants, this ingredient targets fine lines and wrinkles. It is also widely used in treatments for hyperpigmentation, eczema, rosacea, and scars.
Butyrospermum Parkii Butter - anti-ageing, this is shea butter. It is intensely moisturising and also an anti-inflammatory.
Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice - locks moisture into the skin. Moisturising, brightening and soothing, this ingredient is also an antioxidant and antibacterial. It calms the skin and is, therefore, an anti-inflammatory.
Pelargonium Graveolens Flower Oil - also known as geranium seed oil is healing and known to help the skin to regenerate. It is an antifungal, an antiseptic and a powerful anti-inflammatory.
Capric Triglyceride - a moisturising emollient that helps the skin tolerate retinoids. It is also a powerful antioxidant.
Cetearyl Ethylhexanoate - protects the skin’s natural barrier by helping it to retain moisture. This ingredient is also smoothing.
Polyglyceryl-3 Methylglucose Distearate - a barrier product that protects the outer layers of the skin. This property is also stabilising; it stops the cream’s ingredients from separating.
VitaSkin’s Vitamin A Rejuvenating Night Cream contains other natural anti-ageing ingredients. It also has Cetearyl Alcohol, which is a gentle, fatty alcohol that is actually moisturising and nourishing.
Using a VitaSkin night cream
I came across this brand - and product - by chance. It’s in this year’s Holland & Barrett Beauty Advent Calendar. Completely new to me, I didn’t know what to expect. Boy, was I in for a pleasant surprise!
This cream is super-soft and light, while also being rich. That may come across as a bit of a contradiction but, if you ever use this product, you will know what I mean. From the off, it’s super-smoothing. I would liken the feel to a high-quality marine cream.
The moisturisation is there too. I find that many anti-ageing treatment creams feel hydrating when you apply them but seem to ‘dry up’ overnight. With this cream, I woke up with lovely, soft and moisturised skin.
This night cream has a light botanical fragrance that’s not just pleasant but also relaxing - ideal for bedtime. Think of spa-inspired skincare. The cream’s texture is silky.
My skin looked brighter after just one use.
What surprised me as much as the performance of the cream is how much it costs - around £12 for a 60ml jar. The packaging for this product is perfectly designed to protect the cream from light and heat damage. It’s functional; nothing fancy. While VitaSkin has its own distinct branding, it appears to be a Holland & Barrett skincare brand.
