Fending off the signs of ageing isn’t easy at the best of times. It can be almost impossible if you have sensitive skin. Active ingredients in holy grail skincare products, such as retinol and essential oils, are not for everyone. While they can rejuvenate tired and dull skin, they can also cause irritation. Enter… a facial serum for sensitive skin.
If you suffer from skin allergies or a condition such as rosacea or eczema, Brighton-based natural skincare brand Balmonds has a solution. It has launched the Super 7 Serum that restores the skin - gently. It is so gentle, it is even suitable for those with psoriasis or acne. It has an extensive ‘free-from’ list that includes essential oils, alcohol, fragrances, soya, coconut and lanolin, among others. It’s also dairy free and doesn’t contain extracts of nuts.
So, what exactly does it contain? I was interested to find out. While my skin can ‘take’ high-strength retinol solutions, I do suffer from occasional red patches of skin. They are most prominent around the sides of my nose. Although I can use camouflaging products to conceal them, I would rather re-visit my skincare routine to ensure I’m not using products that are causing or inflaming irritation. This serum for sensitive skin looked promising.
The three main active ingredients are: niacinamide, rosehip extract and sea buckthorn. Here’s some more information about their benefits:
Niacinamide, also known as Vitamin B3, is recognised for its skin-calming properties. It also hydrates, minimises hyperpigmentation and supports the skin’s natural barrier. It’s used in many leading anti-ageing products.
Rosehip extract is rich in Vitamin C, making it a potent antioxidant. It’s also anti-inflammatory, but the goodness doesn’t stop there. This ingredient tones and brightens the skin while boosting collagen production and improving elasticity.
Sea buckthorn hydrates the skin while reducing inflammation. It can also firm the skin and prevent it from becoming dehydrated. Many people who are switched onto natural skincare purchase products that contain sea buckthorn because it improves the texture and tone of the face.
What else is in Balmonds Super 7 Seum? Well, water along with vegetable glycerin, epsom salt, inulin, potassium sorbate, sodium hyaluronate, citric acid, borage extract, bladderwrack extract, and dehydroacetic acid.
My experience of using a serum for sensitive skin
In the past, when red patches have flared up on my face, I’ve laid off the retinol and relegated my anti-ageing regimen to a simple hyaluronic acid and light gel moisturiser. I have also swapped a glycolic toner for a calming Cica alternative. In the autumn and winter, however, that is not going to cut it.
I came across Balmonds Super 7 Serum for sensitive skin in Holland & Barrett. Having discovered the retailer’s amazing VitaSkin range, it’s a store I’m really beginning to explore. And Balmonds is yet another new-to-me brand that I was keen to try.
The packaging for this serum is giving me Paula’s Choice vibes. It’s sophisticated, yet simple. There’s no pipette, just a no-faff pump. Thank goodness, because I’m in the habit of not properly securing lids after using serums - and I’ve had more than a few costly accidents! It's worth mentioning that the nozzle of the pump can be locked and unlocked with a simple twist.
What I love about this serum is its consistency. It’s clear and very thin. In fact, it is so light that my skin literally ‘drank’ every last drop almost instantly. The first time I used it, I had a bit of an ‘Ahh…’ moment. It reminded me of the first time I ever used a gel cream. So refreshing!
The serum dries down quickly, leaving no sticky residue. It has no fragrance, which is another plus-point. My skin feels soft and hydrated after each use. This product brightened my skin in less than two weeks.
I’ve paired the serum with Evolve 360 Multi-Peptide Anti-Ageing Cream as well as oat-based moisturisers. I’ve used it both in the morning and at night.
Balmonds Super 7 Serum is sold in a 30ml bottle and retails for £20. The price compares favourably to retinol-based serums and oils.
Sensitive skin and serums
This serum is perfect for sensitive skin. It is a product I will use when I am on breaks from retinol. As well as delivering all-round benefits, it has great green credentials. With 99% natural ingredients, it is very eco-friendly.
A skincare routine should always be flexible, and adapted to meet the skin's changing needs. Sticking with the same products, no matter what, isn't going to do your complexion any favours in the long-run. I am always on the look-out for new products that will help me overcome any concerns and stop my skin from getting so used to the same old products that they no longer work.
Whether you suffer from a skin condition such as acne or, like me, can’t always tolerate high-strength retinol products over a prolonged period of time, this serum will ensure you keep an effective anti-ageing skincare routine going no matter what. In a nutshell: if you are looking for an anti-ageing serum for sensitive skin, this is it.
