Your guide to curating a zero-waste, personalised DIY beauty advent calendar

Every autumn, the cosmetics world undergoes a flurry of excitement as luxury to budget brands drop their annual beauty advent calendars. From glossy cardboard mansions and trains to velvet-lined chests, they promise up to twenty-five days of festive indulgence. Yet, if we are completely honest with ourselves, how many of us actually use every single item tucked behind those perforated doors or inside numbered boxes? Far too often, an expensive calendar yields a handful of hero products — a must-have mascara, a gorgeous lipstick shade, an expensive serum — alongside a drawer full of tiny sample tubes, neon eyeshadows that will never see the light of day and generic ‘fillers’ destined for the back of a cupboard.

It is a wonderful concept in theory but, in practice, traditional beauty advent calendars can generate an enormous amount of clutter and waste. That is why shifting away from mass-produced commercial sets and building your own is arguably the most rewarding festive project you can undertake. By repurposing an empty, reusable advent calendar box that you already own, you can craft a completely bespoke, zero-waste gifting experience tailored precisely to the recipient’s exact tastes, skin type and lifestyle. And it doesn’t even have to be filled exclusively with makeup and skincare products. Not only does this eliminate single-use packaging and unwanted products, but it also transforms the countdown to Christmas into a deeply thoughtful act of curation.

Prepping a reusable beauty advent calendar

The beauty of a sustainable, DIY beauty advent calendar lies in breaking the cycle of buying brand-new, disposable packaging every single year. Instead of purchasing a fresh cardboard calendar that will inevitably end up in the recycling bin on December 26th, start by investing in a sturdy, refillable calendar structure. You may already have one that you managed to save from last year.

If you don’t, there are countless attractive options available to buy — from traditional wooden drawers and fabric hanging pocket banners to felt loops and numbered linen sacks. Better yet, if you are feeling crafty, you can upcycle a sturdy box system or fabric organiser. You could even buy a makeup case and fill it with numbered, wrapped gifts. Once you have your empty calendar ready, give the compartments a quick wipe down and take a moment to map out the sizing. Knowing the physical dimensions of your drawers or pockets in advance will save you from the inevitable frustration of buying a gorgeous full-sized item on impulse only to discover it is a fraction too wide to fit through the door.

The advent I’ve created for my daughter and granddaughter uses P.Louise’s 2025 Cruising Home for Christmas. It’s huge, and hasn’t been easy to store, but it’s robust and still looks brand new.

Spreading the cost of advent calendar contents

One of the most intimidating aspects of assembling a luxury beauty calendar all at once is the upfront financial cost. Even budget skincare and makeup pieces add up remarkably quickly when purchased in a single shopping trip. So, the secret to making this project both budget-friendly and entirely stress-free is to adopt a year-round sourcing mindset.

Instead of scouring the November sales for bargains, treat building an advent calendar as a continuous, gentle treasure hunt. Keep a dedicated basket or storage box tucked away in a cupboard throughout the year. Alternatively, use a free drawer. Whenever you browse your favourite beauty retailers, pick up one or two items that catch your eye — perhaps a hydrating lip balm during a spring sale, a soothing mini face mask spotted on a summer holiday, or a gorgeous hand cream picked up during an autumn restock.

Look out for freebies and Buy One, Get One Free deals. For example, if you need to replace one of your makeup or skincare items shop around for deals that include a gift. I sourced a number of pretty good calendar items from Revolution Beauty. I purchased a skincare set that included a free eyeshadow palette and, after a makeup purchase, I got a mystery bag filled with more than £40-worth of products. During the year, I bought myself a few self-care TikTok bundles from P.Louise and put aside anything I didn’t want to use myself, such as a lip, eye and nose mask set and a mousse body wash. Recently, Made By Mitchell had a Buy One, Get Two Free offer on some products.

If you are on a very tight budget, don't overlook Trouble Maker, W7, Technic, and Sunkissed. These brands offer super-affordable products that don't compromise when it comes to quality. Got a little bit more to spend? For high-end products, TK Maxx is fantastic. I've seen fab bargains on Rodial, NEOM and Glow Recipe products, not to mention Emma Hardie and Laura Ashley sets.

I set up a file in Notes on my mobile phone, taking care to start my list with the door number and its full dimensions. The list was updated with every purchase. I allocated items by box number and dimensions, so when the time came to dig the advent out of storage I knew exactly where everything was going to go and who it was for - either my daughter or granddaughter. This saved a lot of time.

By gathering pieces incrementally across the months, the financial outlay is effortlessly spread out over the year, making it feel like zero extra burden on your monthly budget. This relaxed approach allows you to take full advantage of seasonal clearance events, brand anniversary sales and loyalty rewards points, ensuring you get exceptional value for money without ever compromising on quality. Just keep an eye on product expiry dates and you can’t go far wrong.

Curating with intention (saying goodbye to waste)

The absolute core philosophy of a homemade beauty advent calendar is intentionality. When you are selecting products for a friend, a partner, or a beloved family member, you hold the power to curate a collection where every single item will be genuinely treasured and used up to the very last drop.

To avoid the pitfalls of wasteful products, build your selection around a few foundational rules:

  • Tailor to skin and shade profiles: Pay close attention to what the recipient actually uses. If they prefer dewy liquid highlighters over powder compacts, skip the powders entirely. If they have sensitive skin, curate fragrance-free, calming botanical formulas rather than heavily perfumed chemical exfoliants.

  • Mix minis and hero full-sizes: A great calendar needs rhythm. Combine deluxe travel-sized luxuries —i deal for upcoming winter getaways — with three or four standout full-sized hero products. Perhaps reserve a particularly special full-sized serum or candle for Day 25 or the weekends to build genuine anticipation.

  • Incorporate self-care extras: Beauty is not just about makeup and serums; it encompasses total wellbeing. Intersperse your skincare selections with luxurious bath salts, organic cotton exfoliating pads, silk hair scrunchies, or a mini facial massage gua sha tool. These non-cosmetic items provide a wonderful textural break between heavier beauty products.

  • Look beyond beauty: If you are curating a calendar for someone who uses beauty products but not every day, why not include a few jewellery pieces, fragrances or novelty items? In the calendar I’ve created, I’ve included earring and bracelets as well as tanning mitts and beautiful 3D fridge magnets.

Adding personal touches to a DIY beauty advent calendar

What truly elevates a DIY beauty advent calendar from a clever craft project into an unforgettable gift is the personal narrative woven inside. Because you are the creator, you can infuse the countdown with personality in ways a mass-market brand could never replicate.

Take small strips of heavy card or handmade paper and write a custom note to slip into select drawers alongside the gifts. These little notes can range from warm holiday memories and captioned photos to familiar jokes and mini affirmations. Don’t forget beauty tips on how to best apply a particular serum, or even ‘me-to-you’ vouchers for future experiences — such as the promise of a home-based spa evening or a coffee date.

You can also play with the presentation. Wrapping individual items in leftover tissue paper, tying them with biodegradable twine, or adding handwritten wax-sealed tags to specific days turns the daily unwrapping ritual into a moment of pure tactile joy. If you don’t have tissue paper, it’s not expensive to buy. I got 40 sheets for under £4 and, yes, I intend to scoop them up and re-use them next year.

The actual process of wrapping the gifts and placing them in the numbered boxes is a joy. Because I’d mapped everything throughout the year, it was effortless. By splitting multi-packs of twist-up lip liners, etc. I was able to create numerous double and triple doors (for example, mixing a few lip pencils with a larger item like a setting spray). Days 24 and 25 are the ones with the real ‘Wow!’ factor. Day 24 will be opened by my 31-year-old daughter and she will be getting not one but two face palettes, including Revolution’s powder and cream Everything Face, Eyes and Lips Amalfi Glow from the brand’s Club Riviera collection. Day 25, my 13-year-old granddaughter will find Revolution’s 18-pan Watermelon eye palette, a mascara, a clear lip gloss, and more. I can’t wait until Christmas Eve when the calendar is set to be opened during a family get-together.

The joy of giving without guilt

Embracing the zero-waste, DIY beauty advent calendar transforms a modern commercial festive trend into something much more grounded, sustainable and meaningful. By sourcing items thoughtfully throughout the year, you not only protect your wallet from the December financial squeeze, but you also curate a deeply personal collection that celebrates the recipient precisely as they are.

There is an unmatched sense of satisfaction in watching someone open a calendar where every single compartment holds a tailored delight rather than a forgotten sample. It is sustainable, it is deeply personal and, above all, it puts the magic back into the countdown — one mindful, beautiful day at a time.
